Travel the world with Anthony Bourdain in your backpack
For everyone who has been watching all those wonderful Anthony Bourdain series with watering mouths and now can’t wait to head out into the world again: this new book will satisfy your travel cravings (a little). If you love traveling and good food, a trip with Anthony Bourdain must be absolutely amazing. Fortunately, there are the television series, in which Bourdain drags you by the hair into the world of street food, bizarre encounters, deep conversations and brutal hangovers. No touristy fluff, because Bourdain dives head first into every culture and subculture, with good food as his only guide. His travel experiences have now been brought together posthumously in the book World Travels.
Through Bourdain’s eyes
Anthony Bourdain is no longer with us; in 2018, he took his own life. His assistant Laurie Woolever (he always called her his ‘lieutenant’) had brainstormed a few months before his death with him about a new book, a kind of travel guide through Bourdain’s eyes. She decided to develop his idea, with help from people who had worked closely with him, information from the television series and interviews with friends and family.
This book is therefore not only the ultimate inspiration for the trips of a lifetime, but also a tribute to the Great Bad Travel Guide himself, chef Bourdain. ‘It was a difficult and lonely task to work as a co-author on a book about the wonders of world travel, while my writing partner was no longer traveling through that world,’ Laurie writes in the foreword.
No theme park, but a penis temple
Don’t expect cozy day trips by boat and bus in this book, tips on cheap theme-park tickets or explanations of local flora and fauna – not if it isn’t edible, at least. You can, however, sink your teeth into the colorful descriptions of unique restaurants, organized by continent. Did you know, for example, that you can buy the tastiest bratwurst in Melbourne at the Bratwurst Shop for just eight dollars, that in Bahia, El Salvador, you especially want to eat acarajé, and that in Punakha, Bhutan, there is a temple entirely devoted to penises?
