Watering Mouth: Philly Cheese Steak Bombs

Baguette, strips of steak, bell pepper and onions, then melted cheese on top; there you have it, that sounds like a good idea. The Philly Cheese Steak Sandwich was invented in the 1930s by two hungry brothers. And almost a century later, Tastemade outdoes them with Philly Cheese Steak Sandwich bombs. HOW?

Pat and Harry Olivieri had a hot dog cart together. Pretty creative guys, so in 1930 they came up with a new sandwich: no sausage on it, but steak, which they cut into pieces. Delicious fried onions on the side, melted cheese over it. While Pat was tasting the new invention, a passing taxi driver showed interest. He tasted the sandwich and advised the brothers to stop with those hot dogs, and just make these sandwiches instead. They did, and that was the beginning of the iconic Philly Steak Sandwich.
Making the bomb
Editors at magazine Tastemade ate themselves completely full on these sandwiches, and then came up with a new version: that same steak, with bell pepper, onion and cheese, in a pastry package from the oven. Brilliant idea! Even in the test kitchen, they knew this would be a huge hit. And the very best news: you can make these bombs yourself. Let’s get started!
How to make the Philly Cheese Steak Pastry Boms
- In a large bowl, mix the flour, sugar, salt and yeast. Stir together. Add the oil and milk and knead into a smooth dough. Shape the dough into a ball, place it in the bowl, cover with plastic wrap and let rise for at least an hour.
- Preheat the oven to 175 degrees.
- Knead the dough for a few more minutes, then divide it into four equal parts. Roll each ball of dough out into a thin, round sheet.
- Cut the steak into strips and fry them in a little oil until nicely browned. Remove the meat from the pan and fry the onions and bell pepper in the same pan.
- Brush a sheet of dough with a little oil, and place a quarter of the steak, bell pepper and onions on it. Cover with slices of cheese. Pull up the sides of the dough and make a kind of pouch. Twist the ends of the dough together.
- Brush each package with beaten egg. Bake them in the preheated oven for 25 minutes until golden brown and cooked through.
- Let cool briefly, but eat while still warm. Oohhhh, that melted cheese!
