Forget M&M’S, Treets is back! So much tastier and a whole lot cheaper than M&M’s, with an added bonus: they’re deliciously nostalgic.
Some people swear by M&M’s and can’t wait until certain flavors are also available in the Netherlands. Colleague Rick, for example, really misses these M&M’s flavors after his vacation in the United States and asks everyone to bring back bags of the stuff.
1983: a terrible year for Treets fans
I (born in 1974) grew up with Treets. Chocolate-covered peanuts in a yellow bag that ‘melted in your mouth, not in your hand,’ as the slogan went. Holy smoke, I ate so many of them. And suddenly Treets was gone. It was 1983—just before Doe Maar broke up—and it felt (pre-puberty) as though my life had come to a standstill. So much drama in such a short time. Simply incomprehensible.
Goodbye Treets and Bonitos
Here’s what happened: in 1983, the Mars Group, of which Treets was a part, decided to give both Treets and Bonitos (Treets without peanuts) some fun colors and sell them as M&M’s (fun fact: those are the initials of their inventors, Mars & Murrie’s). Treets became M&M’s Peanut and Bonitos became M&M’s Chocolate. But for true fans, those M&M’s Peanuts had nothing to do with the real deal.

You get used to anything, and I ate myself silly on M&M’s just the same. Until a while ago. I started feeling a little nauseated by M&M’s inclusive nonsense with their woke purple character. And now Treets is back! And that’s all thanks to the French confectionery company Lutti and the German shareholder company Katjes, which was quick to seize the opportunity when it turned out that the Mars Group had failed to renew its ownership rights to Treets. It’s Treets’ comeback.
Granted, it comes in a new orange jacket—M&M’s Peanut is already in a yellow bag, after all—but it tastes just as good as it did back then. What am I saying? At the excellent price of 1.49 euros, I picked up the new old Treets at Kruidvat, so much cheaper than M&M’s Peanut, and even tastier than before. Deliciously crunchy, thick chocolate, no artificial colorings, large peanuts: YUM!
‘Treets is snacking with pleasure!’, they said in 1979, and that’s still true.
