Very bizarre trend: ‘cooking’ burgers in water
TikTok isn’t just a platform where we discover new recipes. It also teaches us new techniques. So now we know how to turn pancakes into spaghetti and that it’s a very good idea to deep-fry mozzarella balls. A new technique came along recently, and whether it’s such a good idea remains highly questionable. What am I talking about? Cooking hamburgers in water. Yes, really.
They’re also known as ‘water burgers’. When I hear that, I think of human burgers who live in/on/with water before I think of meat burgers combined with water. But anyway, apparently it’s a thing. At least it’s something different from frying hamburgers in a dry grill pan.
Cooking burgers in water
The whole concept of water burgers is that you cook your burgers in a layer of water. So no butter, oil or any other kind of fat, just a layer of water. The burgers slowly cook through in it. TikTokers are going wild over it—and not in a good way. ‘COOKING hamburgers in water? That’s going too far’ and ‘Meat should simmer slowly, not boil’ are just some of the reactions.

Small layer
Adding as much water as you see in the TikTok video seems completely unnecessary to me. Still, a very small layer of water can be beneficial when frying burgers. Your burgers will brown a little more easily and stay juicy. Give it a try, and make sure you don’t go overboard with the amount of water—before your burgers end up taking a bath after all.
