We need to talk about All You Can Eat sushi

Sushi has been incredibly popular in the Netherlands for years. In 2022, there were more than 900 sushi restaurants in the Netherlands, twice as many as three years earlier (!). Understandably so, because I don’t know anyone who doesn’t like it. Sushi is clearly here to stay and there’s serious money to be made from it. Because seriously: can we talk about the price of All You Can Eat sushi?

During my student days, I went to a sushi restaurant about once a week. The whole All You Can Eat concept was still new, and we eagerly took advantage of it as poor students. We happily made our way through the five rounds we were allowed to order. The best thing about this sushi craze was the price: a princely feast for €23—try finding that now.
All You Can Eat Sushi for almost forty euros?!
You know how it is: grab a quick bite before going to the cinema. For me, nothing beats Sumo at times like that. Tuck into unlimited food and collapse into your cinema seat in a food coma. Wonderful. Until you get the bill. These days, you simply pay €38.50 at an All You Can Eat sushi restaurant. For the food alone. That’s a price increase of around 70 percent! Add a few drinks and hold on a minute: did we really have to fork out €70 per person?!
Four-course dinner
For that amount, you can easily have a four-course dinner somewhere else. At a genuinely good Japanese restaurant, I’m happy to pay a little more… but at Sumo?! Even at Loetje (which I also find seriously overpriced), you pay less for a quick bite. And at least there, there isn’t a timer counting down to get you out of the place as quickly as possible. Sushi is, of course, absolutely delicious, and I understand that prices are rising, but I find this truly absurd.
