Gordon Ramsay, who previously came under fire for astronomical prices for his gastronomic antics, has now incurred the wrath of the burger-loving public. Of course, the man can cook (although his carbonara has also driven many people up the wall), and no doubt all the chefs who do the work in his restaurants can too. But asking this amount for a hamburger, at a time when many people have to tighten their belts?
One of the burgers will cost eighty pounds in his latest venture, the hamburger joint Gordon Ramsay Burger at Harrod’s in the fancy Harrod’s department store in London. Yep, an eight and a zero. In euros: € 88.80. Eater London, the leading site for everything related to the hospitality industry in London, which stays on top of the news and trends, has reported on this remarkable piece of news.
They’re allowed to reopen in England
After a COVID closure that was just as brutal as it was for the Dutch hospitality industry, restaurants in England are reopening today. Of course, that’s absolutely worth celebrating, but to do so with an eighty-pound burger? Erm, sure. For some people. But for comparison: at Gordon Ramsay Burger (in Planet Hollywood) in Las Vegas, where money also seems to be flying around, you pay $ 25.99 for the most expensive burger. It does come with truffle butter, and by now we know why truffles can be so exclusive…
Only the best cows
What accounts for this price difference? It may be because the fanciest Harrod’s burger is made with Wagyu. Wagyu, that absurdly tender and flavorful beef, which also manages to move the FavorFlav reader. Eater also reports that Gordon, going completely against the trend that apparently currently prevails in London’s burger scene, will be putting an awful lot of inventive toppings in his burgers. According to Eater, the hippest burgers in London are currently characterized by simplicity, with just a patty, cheese and sauce. The busy chef therefore says on the new restaurant’s website that he is bringing ‘a taste of America’ to London, meaning he is happily doing his own thing.
Bubbles with your burger is always a good idea
For the Harrod’s audience, there will also be a lobster burger to order, naturally accompanied by a glass of champagne, and the occasional penny-pincher can make do with the cheapest burger at twenty-four pounds. Of course, we wish all hospitality entrepreneurs mega success and money after this shitty year… But we do hope that smaller entrepreneurs, who don’t necessarily have a clientele able to pay nearly ninety euros for a burger, also get the chance to recover from this crisis.
