What is that purple thing next to Ronald McDonald?
On the scale of global problems, this is just a minor thing, but sometimes you still wonder: what is that purple creature next to Ronald McDonald actually supposed to be? Ever since the identity of Grimace (because that’s what he’s called) was revealed, everything has become clear. Or has it?
For years, you could get Happy Meal figurines related to McDonald’s. The (terrifying) little clown, of course, Ronald McDonald himself, and a few of his friends. One of those friends was a purple blob with a face, hands and feet. Do you know who we mean? As it turns out, that thing is called ‘Grimace’, revealed the owner of a McDonald’s in Canada.
Unclear
This manager also revealed that Grimace represents a taste bud. Yes, that’s quite a shock, understandably, but it’s true: that purple thing with an unclear silhouette is apparently one of those little taste buds on your tongue that lets you properly taste all those delicious snacks. Huh, what?
Melting ice cream
In 2012, McDonald’s announced that Grimace represented a milkshake. Even stranger, because in what way does that thing resemble half-melted soft-serve ice cream with extra sugar? None whatsoever, so we can dismiss that explanation.
Bandit mask
Grimace used to wear a little bandit mask, by the way, and was the enemy of milkshakes, but that was probably dreamt up in the 1970s by McDonald’s creative team, back when LSD wasn’t yet on the list of controlled substances. Grimace also had four arms back then, and children were afraid of him. So headquarters decided to turn him into a cuddly… taste bud? I’d check how much sherry is still left in the bottle, guys.
