Whether You Like Your Sausage

groente hotdog

Anyone who knows us a little knows that we love sinking our teeth into a hot sausage. From star sausage to hotdog that is. And the HEMA hotdog scores pretty highly on that front. A crispy bun, mini smoked sausage in the middle and a delicious sauce to finish it off. What’s not to like? That it’s not necessarily very healthy, perhaps. Hence, there’s now a more sustainable and healthier version of our go-to bun: the vegan vegetable hotdog.

Yes, yes, you read that right. HEMA is treating us to an expansion of its vegan range. The new hotdog consists of nine (!) types of vegetables, a vegan bun and a vegan sauce. From today, anyone who doesn’t eat meat can satisfy their cravings with this vegan version.

So, how does it taste?

We fished some loose change (because it’s only two euros) out from between the sofa cushions and sped to HEMA with squealing tires. The bun is just as soft on the inside and crispy on the outside as the non-vegan version. The sauce also comes very close to the ‘regular’ one. The sausage (fortunately) has a flavor of its own: herby with a smoky aftertaste. Are we fans? It was gone within two minutes. So, um, definitely!

Let’s keep things moving with that bite

HEMA previously announced that it wants to create a plant-based version of all its well-known food products. And after the vegan smoked sausage, the vegan apple crumble pie and vegetarian sausage rolls, thankfully they’re carrying on. We’ll be lying outside the door soon in the hope of a vegan tompouce.

The plant-based hotdog is now available at a number of locations: Utrecht Central Station, Amsterdam-Zuid WTC, Amsterdam Nieuwendijk, Eindhoven Centrum, Groningen – Paddepoel, Almere Stad, Amsterdam Osdorp, Harderwijk, Nijmegen Centrum and Maassluis. More locations coming soon.
