Why Everything Tastes Better with Satay Sauce
Eating out is one of my biggest hobbies. You could also call it a passion for food. So yes, an elaborate dinner at a Michelin-starred restaurant absolutely makes me happy. But a portion of fries from the snack bar makes me at least as happy. Fries war style, obviously. With a croquette. A satay croquette, to be precise. Because believe me: life is so much better with satay sauce.
There genuinely isn’t a single ingredient and/or dish that wouldn’t benefit from a dollop of satay sauce. Of course, you have the obvious things like fries or a chicken skewer, but definitely try it with a toasted sandwich too. And it doesn’t even have to be a toasted sandwich with chicken, bean sprouts and the whole shebang. No way, a ham and cheese toasted sandwich is already a whole lot tastier dipped in some of that peanut sauce.
But also a snack you eat because it’s healthy; for example, a (snack) cucumber. Pour satay sauce over it (and don’t call it healthy, just call it delicious) and you’ll immediately be a lot happier. Cauliflower with satay sauce? Of course. Green beans? Check. Fish fingers? Just do it!
A slice of bread with apple, spreadable cheese and satay sauce
For a moment I was afraid I was the only one who even prefers to eat a shawarma sandwich with satay sauce (yes, really), but a quick Google search tells me there are even more peanut sauce fans out there. A whole lot more, in fact. Some of the suggestions: spiral-shaped crisps with satay sauce, a satay pancake and a slice of bread with apple, spreadable cheese and satay sauce. Seriously, that last one? I love this way of thinking (read: combining everything with satay sauce), so you understand: I’m definitely going to try this sometime.
It’s a shame that satay sauce doesn’t always have the most sophisticated reputation. If you ask me, that should change. Loetje, bring on that steak satay. McDonald’s has had satay weeks before (rightly so), and they should bring them back. Michelin-starred chefs, where is this underrated sauce on your menus? I can feel a satay revolution coming.
