Why I’m in Love with My Shopping Trolley—and Why You’ll Want One Too

I have something to confess. A secret I kept hidden until recently behind my carefully curated appearance of a millennial with a certain je-ne-sais-quoi. This secret is parked in my hallway. My black shopping trolley.

To be clear, I didn’t choose a stylish model that could accidentally be cool, like a trolley with flamingos or a retro design. No. My shopping trolley is black, sturdy and so practical that my grandmother would buy one without hesitation. In fact, I think she already has one.

The Beginning of an Unlikely Love

It all began with a disappointment: an afternoon of grocery shopping during which I thought I could manage with just a canvas bag and my self-confidence. Three boxes of laundry detergent, two litres of milk, Greek yoghurt, a few packets of pasta and a jar of Nocciolata (the best chocolate spread in the world) later, I could feel my fingers slowly dying. As I staggered and sweated my way into my street, I knew: things had to change.

Enter: the shopping trolley.

The Shame Is Over

At first, I was absolutely mortified. I had ordered the thing online, hoping the postman would secretly leave it behind without a judgmental look. The first time I took it outside, I felt as though I had suddenly turned 78 and had to explain to my neighbour at bingo that my hip was brand-new. But after just three metres, I started to feel something strange. Peace.

With my trolley, I could finally take everything my heart desired. Cauliflowers? Load them up! That offer on six packs of rice? No problem. Suddenly, I had a kind of mobile treasure chest on wheels. And do you know what’s even better? Nobody stops you when you’re walking around with one of these. It’s as though you have an invisible shield that lets you manoeuvre through the narrowest aisles. Other people even move aside a little. Magical.

I Love My Shopping Trolley

I admit it: it took some getting used to accepting that my inner thirty-something would rather choose functionality than an Instagram-worthy look. But let’s be honest: with that black hero, I save myself back pain and frustration—and I always have room for an extra bag of tortilla chips. And the fact that people now stare at me instead of whistling at me doesn’t bother me. Because I love my shopping trolley. More than that; it’s the most mature relationship I’ve had so far.

And I’m sure that once you’ve experienced having such a flexible powerhouse by your side, you won’t want to be without one either. So, in the spirit of spreading the trolley love, Lidl currently has one on offer. And the best part is that it’s also a foldable shopping trolley, so it won’t get in the way in your hallway. You can get this stylish little number for less than eight euros right now. Pack it up, roll away, thank me later.
