Why We’re Fans of Lidl’s New ‘Don’t Waste Me’ Fruit and Vegetable Bag

Last week, we pulled a box of cereal churros and a bag of chimichurri chips from the shelves at Lidl. We were thrilled. But what makes us even happier is the new ‘Don’t Waste Me fruit and vegetable bag’ in stores.

The broad figures: one-third of the food produced worldwide goes to waste. And that’s despite the fact that so many families can barely make ends meet—or worse: have nothing to eat. We all know things have to change—and yes: there are genuinely plenty of products that you can still eat perfectly well after the date on the packaging (such as these 9 products, for example).

Fruit and vegetables are also thrown away very quickly. Even though you can vary endlessly with them. Banana cake (with rum, because just look outside..) made with your overripe bananas, tomato soup, smoothies.. the possibilities are virtually endless.

So this new ‘Don’t Waste Me’ fruit and vegetable bag from Lidl is a great way to combat food waste. The bag contains fresh fruit and vegetables that can no longer be sold, but are still suitable for eating. The bag is available for €3 in the fruit and vegetable section of all 440 Lidl stores and contains an average of around 4 kg of fruit and vegetables.

For €3, the bag gets you a healthy meal and helps combat food waste. A great deal, if you ask me!

Food Banks Netherlands

Depending on the amount of available fruit and vegetables that meet the criteria, the bags are offered daily. This new initiative does mean that Lidl’s partnership with Too Good To Go is ending. However, donations of fruit and vegetables to Food Banks Netherlands will continue as usual. Lidl’s leftover bread that is no longer suitable for human consumption is processed, among other things, into animal feed for Kipster chickens—you know, those delicious Kipster eggs.
