Wow: the Big Mac in the Netherlands contains so many more calories

If there’s one thing you can count on, it’s that McDonald’s tastes virtually the same wherever you are in the world. And yet, there turns out to be a difference. In an unexpected area: the number of calories. Because did you know that this varies significantly from country to country? And that the Netherlands ranks among the countries with the highest number of calories?

You might think that the Big Mac in the United States contains the most calories… But that’s not the case.
Here, the Big Mac contains the most calories
Australia and the United Arab Emirates take the ‘honor’: there, a Big Mac contains no fewer than 564 calories. Quite a hefty one, huh? And quite a difference compared with the country where the Big Mac contains the fewest calories: in Israel, a Big Mac contains ‘only’ 380 calories. A remarkable difference of 184 calories!
The Dutch Big Mac contains 510 calories, which is roughly the European average. Only Belgium comes in slightly lower: 495 calories per burger. What about Asia? In Japan, a Big Mac contains 557 calories (putting it in second place), in Singapore 522, and in China 520.
What causes this difference?
You would think that a Big Mac has the same ingredients everywhere in the world, so where do these differences come from? The biggest difference lies in the ingredients of the famous Big Mac sauce; they do differ slightly after all, and you can notice that in the number of calories. But simply the amount of sauce also makes a big difference, as does the beef used. In Israel, for example, it is considerably leaner.
Just to be clear: that difference of 184 calories is the same as four chicken nuggets — bizarre, right?
