You can now buy pepernoot ice cream at Aldi
In August, I’m not interested in them at all yet, but as soon as November arrives, all I want is pepernoot. Or kruidnoot, actually. So I immediately reared up like Sinterklaas’s horse when I spotted pepernoot ice cream at Aldi. Is this ice cream irresistibly moreish, or will it end up in the back corner of the drawer in the freezer?
Every year, we’re surprised with new Sinterklaas sweets. Tony’s Chocolonely already came out with the Sinterklaas chocolate bar: a chocolate bar with pepernoot and foam candies inside. And Van Delft launched an entire range of pepernoten in cocktail flavours. Yes, we’ve been pretty spoiled so far this year. Can Aldi’s pepernoot ice cream be added to the list?

It won’t surprise you, but like pretty much every December treat, this pepernoot ice cream is a real guilty pleasure. As is only fitting for Sinterklaas sweets—if you ask me. No, there’s nothing healthy in this. There is sugar, whipped cream, whole milk, spices and… obviously: kruidnoot cookies. We’re immediately critical of that, though: the packaging really does say ‘pepernoot ice cream with pieces of pepernoot’. And we all know that a pepernoot isn’t a kruidnoot. Aldi, what do we think of this ourselves?
The verdict
So: what does it actually taste like? Well, I definitely taste kruidnoten. Or actually more like those cookie and speculaas spices from a jar, but those are also used in kruidnoten. As stated on the packaging, it contains tiny pieces of kruidnoot. In my opinion, they don’t add all that much. It would have been tastier if there had been larger pieces, so you could have something to chew on in between spoonfuls.
All in all, this really is the kind of tub you can’t stop eating from. Extremely sweet, but I keep eating it anyway. I would know, because in the meantime I’ve been putting a new bite in my mouth after every sentence I type.
