You’ll find the tastiest ice cream in the Netherlands at De Roset in Castricum
Celebrations at De Roset in Castricum! Their ice cream has not only been named the best ice cream in North Holland; their cherry ice cream has also been awarded the title of best pastry-chef ice cream in the Netherlands.
There’s nothing better than truly artisanal ice cream. I’ll happily drive for miles for it and can effortlessly find the best places for special ice cream. This weekend I’m heading to Castricum, because I want to try their award-winning cherry ice cream right away.
Second place just last year
From dozens of entries from all over the Netherlands, the jury of the Zaanse Patisserie College chose the ice cream made by Vince Spijkerman of pastry bakery De Roset in Castricum as the very best. No surprise to connoisseurs, who have been finding their way to the ice cream shop for years. In fact, last year they received second prize.
Cherry ice cream
All entrants were given the assignment of making cherry ice cream to enable a fair comparison. Why choose this particular flavor? “Strawberry and raspberry ice cream are simply a little easier to make; with cherry ice cream, the flavor tends to fade more quickly. That wasn’t the case in Castricum—you can really taste the cherries. Extremely impressive,” explains jury chairman Hans Tros of Patisserie College Zaanstad.
Vince Spijkerman is over the moon. He thinks he owes the prize to using fresh ingredients and leaving out artificial coloring and flavorings. First place is therefore the cherry on the cake—or rather, the ice cream!
Off to Castricum
So hop on over to the ice cream shop on Burgemeester Mooijstraat. You can visit seven days a week. Who are you going to get ice cream with this weekend?
