Yuck! Poop bacteria in sausages at Lidl: supermarket issues warning
Yuck, a poop bacteria. I think that’s such a disgusting word—and especially when combined with food. As in this case: in Lidl’s beef sausages. STEC has been found in them. This bacterium, also known as the poop bacteria, can pose serious health risks to people with weakened immune systems. How can this happen and what can you do about it?
Poop bacteria: beware
STEC stands for Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli. You may also encounter it under the name ‘E. coli bacteria’. The poop bacteria gets its name because this bacterium is present in the feces of someone carrying it, and it can cause diarrhea. Through feces, such a bacterium can spread quickly; STEC infection is transmitted via the hands. After using the toilet, the bacterium can be present on, for example, the toilet seat, flush button, tap or door handle.
Infection through food
You can become infected in various ways. Infection through food is well known. Don’t think that you can’t become infected if you don’t eat meat. Infection does not only occur through meat (that is undercooked) or raw-milk cheeses. It can also happen by eating contaminated vegetables. Do you remember the burger disaster involving the poop bacteria outbreak at McDonald’s? Sliced onions were probably the culprit here. And the spinach from Jumbo was also found to contain the poop bacteria. Albert Heijn made the news because of the poop bacteria in Spanish cheese.
Getting sick: not necessarily
Not everyone who is infected becomes ill. A STEC infection usually clears up on its own. If you do become ill, you may suffer from diarrhea, sometimes with blood in it. Unfortunately, some people do become seriously ill—people with weakened immune systems, such as those who are sick, pregnant women and older people.

This safety warning applies exclusively to beef sausages with a best-before date of 18-01-2025 and barcode 4056489682035. So check your fridge. Do you have this sausage at home?
