Burger drama: death and illnesses caused by E. coli outbreak at McDonald’s

Burger drama at McDonald’s. The CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) has issued a food safety warning that is making even the biggest fast-food lovers shudder. An E. coli outbreak, in other words, a poop bacterium, has found its way into the popular Quarter Pounders at McDonald’s. So far, there have been no fewer than 49 reported cases of illness in 10 states, including ten hospitalizations and one death. Shocking!

The CDC reports that sliced onions are likely to blame. In a statement, McDonald’s says it has removed all sliced onions and Quarter Pounder patties from the menu in the affected states – most cases of illness have been reported in Colorado and Nebraska. Outside these two affected states, you can no longer order Quarter Pounders in Kansas, Utah, Wyoming and parts of Idaho, Iowa, Missouri, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico and Oklahoma.

And if you think you’re safe outside these states, check the local menu: in some other states, Quarter Pounders have also temporarily disappeared from the menu.

Side effect: dMcDonald’s share price fell sharply when news of the outbreak emerged.
