Tips & tricks

Keep it cool

zomer

Lovely, that warm weather. But your appetite soon disappears, even though eating a proper meal is really not such a bad idea if you want to try all those delicious summer drinks. Don’t worry: with these food and drink tips, you’ll keep a cool head and a full stomach.

Fluids, fluids and more fluids is the motto. Now, don’t immediately put that bottle of wine to your lips (but do put it in the fridge), because you can eat fluids too. By eating a salad with watermelon, feta, mint and olives, for example. Did you know that cucumber is 98 percent water? That’s why the combination with wonderfully fresh yoghurt in tzatziki is ideal for a hot day. Add a crispy piece of pita bread and dig in.

Yoghurt drinks

Speaking of yoghurt, they love it in India and Turkey. For good reason: it can get very hot in both countries, and on days like that, little is as refreshing as a cold glass of lassi or ayran. What’s more, it even helps soothe a burnt tongue.

Soup

Or how about a cold avocado soup? A nice change from gazpacho (although Ottolenghi’s watermelon version is definitely worth trying).

No heat

The last thing you want on a hot day is to stand over a hot stove, so save yourself the trouble and go for tartare, Vietnamese summer rolls, panzanella or one of these other dishes that don’t require any heat source.

Ice ice baby

Let’s be honest, little is as cooling as an ice cream. People all over the world feel the same way, because almost every (hot) country has its own kind of shaved ice. By the way, we expect the boozy Slush Puppie to make its breakthrough this summer. Alcoholic ice pops are popping up everywhere, too: from popsicles with champagne to radler ice.

Booze

We know: alcohol may seem to quench your thirst, but it doesn’t. Nevertheless, some summer drinks are simply irresistible on a sultry summer evening. Like this champagne-watermelon mimosa, for example, an exotic beer, a chilled red wine or one of the most festive summer drinks of all: sangria.
