10 hilarious old advertisements (with downright bizarre nutritional advice)

Anyone who thought that people used to say nothing but ‘candy is healthy, eat an apple’ and ‘milk is good for everyone’ is mistaken. If we are to believe old advertisements, we were supposed to drink cola. And eat Mars bars. And McDonald’s. Honestly, aren’t these 10 ads much more fun than today’s patronizing advice?

I almost wonder whether I was born in the wrong era. Eating McDonald’s because it contains so many vitamins and minerals? No problem.
Eat a Mars bar, it’s healthy
This ad basically puts our dream on paper. Eating a Mars bar ‘because it benefits our health’? And eating milk, eggs, butter and chocolate because they are ‘medically recommended’? I want a time machine right now. Bring me back to the fifties!

Do: eat sticks of butter
A golden tip: eat as much butter as possible. Because butter is slippery and that keeps our arteries nice and slippery. Until they become clogged.

Lightly digestible Bros
Lovely and easy to digest indeed, one of those Bros bars full of sugar and fat. What I find just as astonishing: 2 for 5 cents. For that price, you can stuff down so many Bros bars that they suddenly aren’t so easy to digest anymore.

Italianos for the cold
Caught a cold? Devour a roll of Italianos. The sugary licorice drops (which don’t even contain menthol or anything like it) will get rid of that cough in no time. How did we not know this sooner!

Cola for children
Forget milk: just fill that bottle with cola. The younger, the better. That way, they’ll fit right in during those awkward teenage years!

Grow big and strong with Liga
By now, we know that a Liga contains so much sugar that you’d be better off eating a doughnut. That never occurred to people back then. No, in those days you ate a Liga mainly for ‘the nutrients for building and maintaining the body’.

Get your vitamins at McDonald’s
See, Maccie is actually healthy. The man who ate McDonald’s three times a day and lost kilos doing so knew that all along.

Can’t take it anymore? Drink wine
Pleegzuster Bloedwijn was a red wine to which iron compounds and all kinds of herbs had been added, among other things. A few glasses a day and you’d feel ‘fit and cheerful’ again. I can see why, with an alcohol content of 13.5%.

7-Up for your baby
7-Up is ‘so pure’. Exactly what your innocent and unsuspecting baby needs.

That’ll grow a mustache
I had to blink twice. Do these young lads actually have a beer in their hands? No, it’s a soft drink with a thick layer of foam. Especially for children, of course.
