10x food that’s disgustingly delicious #9

As much as we sometimes (or rather: quite often) like to get all fancy about food, we all have a soft spot for stuff that’s disgusting and delicious at the same time. These are our favorite disgustingly delicious snacks at the moment. Is your guilty pleasure among them too?

When you’re craving string cheese

Cheese strings—that’s cheese you can peel. Wieke: “yes, now that I put it like that, it does sound really weird. But Cheestring Stripkaas really is my guilty pleasure. It’s so chemical and so wonderful at the same time. Don’t take a bite, that’s cheating, but pull off thin strands—as intended.”

Apparently, there are more fans of string cheese…

But you don’t want to know everything about it

Albert Heijn’s ready-made cheeseburgers. This cheeseburger bun is very soggy, with a slice of cheese melting out and meat that has nothing to do with meat. No, don’t secretly buy the more expensive version—this one is genuinely disgustingly delicious! Oh, and don’t read the ingredients list, okay?

A quick snack for when you’re craving something ‘tasty’

Unox satay noodles. They have nothing to do with authentic ramen, but they’re sooo disgustingly delicious. Salty, chemical, absolutely perfect when you have a hangover (or when you come home wasted).

No fancy finger food

No thanks, just give us—a little indulgence now and then—a good old-fashioned Dutch drinks board with cubes of young cheese and thick slices of liver sausage and cooked sausage. Smoked beef sausage? No, that’s already too posh. And some nice cheap mustard on the side. Perfect. Don’t change a thing. Or wait: cocktail sausage in croissant dough is allowed too. And if you really want to go all out, make this wonderfully convivial drinks-party pie.

Shameless shawarma

A shawarma roll from the snack bar, deep-fried, please. With garlic sauce. So filthy that nobody dares order it. But we’re not deterred. “A crispy flatbread filled with spiced shawarma meat—delicious!”

It slides right in

A Bockworst bun. And then a very thick layer of mustard, ketchup and mayo on top. Obscenely disgustingly delicious. Sharon: “sometimes I can’t believe I’m actually eating this. But it just slides down so deliciously.”

More sauce, please

Straight from the hand: the meatball sandwich with satay sauce from Albert Heijn. Because, as Wieke puts it: “that meatball is wonderfully soggy.” The only downside: there’s never enough satay sauce.

Amaretto with what?

Smirnoff with ice, Apflekorn with ice—yes, it goes down like… a meatball sandwich with satay sauce. Also great: gin with ginger ale and Amaretto with cassis. And green Breezer. Colleague Wieke knocks it back effortlessly. The rest of us watch apprehensively.

Born of desperation

Delilah: “My disgustingly delicious discovery during the coronavirus era: salted breadsticks (sticks?) with hummus. Those supremely boring, dry, salty, dull things, with a bowl of hummus alongside. Built-in braking mechanism: they’re incredibly fragile, so you have to do this very calmly and carefully, so you don’t have to fish those annoying centimeter-sized pieces out of your hummus. Disgusting? A little. Delicious? A little. Born of desperation? You bet.”

Tastes like coconut

We’re still not sold, when it comes to vegan cheese. Okay, every now and then we taste something that comes close in terms of flavor and texture. But often it’s still very unsatisfying if you really love cheese. Colleague Manon is willing to give it a try. She eats vegan toasted sandwiches with Violife cheese slices. “It doesn’t taste anything like real cheese, more like coconut, actually. And unfortunately it doesn’t have that lovely fatty quality cheese has either. So it doesn’t melt at all. But still: when I crave a toasted sandwich, I go for it anyway. With a delicious curry dip on the side, of course.”
