10x Food That’s Guilty-Pleasure Delicious #15

Yesss, it’s time once again to enjoy the ultimate guilty pleasures! Maybe you’ll even get some inspiration for your Christmas dinner! Although… with most of these shamelessly delicious snacks, you probably wouldn’t dare show your face at anyone’s house. Even though they’re secretly so good! But if you ever want to be taken seriously as a foodie again, you’d better keep this to yourself (yes, I speak from experience).

During the previous lockdown, I shamelessly ate some seriously guilty-pleasure food every now and then. And by now, it’s becoming a tradition, because I’m effortlessly picking up the habit again during this lockdown. What exactly? Look and recoil….

Dr. Oetker Wolkentoetje
I love Wolkentoetjes! I think the caramel version is the most delicious one. Whether it really tastes like caramel… Well, medium. But it’s still gone within three seconds. And that layer of cream really finishes it off.

Dr. Oetker Ristorante Bolognese pizza
Another winner from Dr. Oetker: Bolognese pizza. It may not sound particularly appealing, but I genuinely think this pizza is amazing. It doesn’t taste like Bolognese, or anything else Italian—and I couldn’t even tell you exactly what it does taste like. But it’s so good every once in a while!

Chicken satay bapao
I wrote before about how everything tastes better with satay sauce, and I stand by that. So if there are ready-made snacks containing satay, I’m immediately interested. This gigantic, soggy bun filled with a dubious chicken-like substance: bring it on!

Jumbo lasagna
Jumbo’s single-serving lasagna is so incredibly chemical-tasting that you wonder whether its makers have ever actually seen a lasagna in real life. Some people shudder at the mere words ‘supermarket lasagna’, and to those people I say: don’t cheat; you really have to get the store-brand one. So much béchamel sauce that it’s still perfectly (barely) edible.

PEZ candy
These really used to be my favorite sweets, and these days I still occasionally see them at Dirk or Jamin. Then I immediately take them home and shamelessly devour them all at once. These things are so addictive. So sweet. And all those colors—I have no idea which color corresponds to which flavor, but it’s pure enjoyment.

Chicken nuggets from Appie
I think it’s simply part of the chicken nugget concept that you’re never sure whether what you’re eating is actually chicken. I never know at Maccie either, and the same goes for supermarket ones. But with a gigantic amount of chili sauce or BBQ sauce on the side, they still make a great snack!

Tex-Mex Style Dip
There’s obviously a reason this can contains not a single mention of avocado or guacamole—because ultimately, it doesn’t have much to do with either. And yet I always prefer this stuff to ‘real’ guacamole. This one is simply much tastier.

Leerdammer Lightlife
Cheese is the most delicious thing there is. But cheese is also expensive. And you know: if cheese isn’t expensive, it’s probably not much good. Just look at those 50-cent packets of Cheddar. They’re somewhat okay (and that’s putting it very positively) on your hamburger, but they have so little to do with Cheddar. Leerdammer Lightlife is also under two euros, though, and I seriously eat it on bread pretty often. It tastes so inauthentic and, really, so little like cheese, but I just keep eating it.

Albert Heijn store-brand pesto
92 cents for two jars. TWO! You’re basically stealing from your own wallet if you don’t buy it. And who cares about all those E-numbers? It’s deliciously salty and genuinely great value for money.

Instant mashed potatoes
How it’s even possible to make mashed potatoes from a packet remains something of a mystery to me. It probably isn’t entirely healthy for you, but it’s simply incredibly tasty. In fact, I’ve eaten ‘real’ mashed potatoes at people’s houses before and thought, while eating: just give me the powdered version. Yes, really.

Vlamtosti grilled sandwiches
I LOVE vlammetjes and am genuinely disappointed that they almost never appear on drinks menus anymore. Making a grilled sandwich à la vlammetjes yourself is simply too much work. So ready-made: LOVE IT. Does this even still belong in this category? Because I genuinely think this is incredibly delicious!
