Walmart is the king of bizarre, incomprehensible products. But guess what? Dutch supermarkets can do it too! In the comment sections of our Facebook posts about crazy supermarket products, you really went all out—for which we thank you. We selected the most striking ones.
Frothing milk
For years, I worked in hospitality and made the most delicious cappuccinos. But never—and I really mean NEVER—was any milk other than “regular” whole milk used for them. But wait a minute, so there’s also cappuccino frothing milk, for which you pay almost one euro for half a litre, and frothing milk specially for lattes for, brace yourself: €2.39 per carton… Just don’t use it to make a flat white! Then things really go wrong.
Pancake marketing
Pancake marketing. This should be a word in the Dikke van Dale. Meaning: “Adding the word ‘pancake’ to everyday products so you can charge consumers more money for exactly the same product.” Only buy them if you believe in fairy tales. Examples: pancake flour and pancake bacon.
You could knock me down
There’s no difference between butterhead lettuce and head lettuce, is there? And yet: for one Lactuca sativa, as the lettuce is officially called, you pay €2.49, and for the other €1.09…
Frozen croissants
I didn’t know it was a thing, but apparently people freeze their croissants. There are loads of brands, too! “Fresh from the bakery”—no, no: fresh from your freezer! I do understand that they were freshly made in a bakery, but that’s exactly the point! In my opinion, croissants don’t come fresh and delicious from the bakery if you then freeze them for months. Very tasty, though: Crisp’s bake-at-home croissants…
Potatoes with bacon and onion
If there are two products that really need to be prepared fresh in your kitchen, they’re onion and bacon. The fact that these potato slices already contain bacon and onion is genuinely sad. Surely you want to fry some fresh onion and then add that wonderfully, truly fatty bacon to the pan (or better: the oven!)
