6 new terraces in Amsterdam you’ll want to visit as soon as possible
We can’t wait to celebrate spring on a sunny terrace—how about you? But we’ll gladly take a spot in the shade too, if that’s the only option (and given the huge crowds many hospitality businesses have been dealing with lately, that’s quite likely). As long as we can order a drink and a snack, and enjoy watching the world go by!
So let’s kick off terrace season with a few new terraces in Amsterdam to try. Whether you live in the capital or are just visiting; it’s always fun to leave the well-trodden (tourist) paths behind and look for new spots in less familiar neighbourhoods or streets. The Amsterdam newspaper Het Parool has put together a list of some fantastic new terraces.
In Amsterdam-Centrum
Shaffy Restobar
The Amsterdam canals are still breathtakingly beautiful, and this establishment, located in the Felix Meritis cultural centre, also has a great terrace by the water. People-watching, watching boats go by, and ordering special small and larger dishes. Bar snacks and a solid cocktail menu are also on offer, and if you really want to imagine yourself as Ramses Shaffy, you might end up having one drink too many. Keizersgracht 324, Amsterdam
No Rules
No Rules has the honour of running this stunning terrace in Vondelpark. FavorFlav’s Sharon previously wrote at length about the special menu from the makers of non-traditional pizzas (and lots of other dishes and snacks). It remains wonderful to spend time beneath the stately steps of the Vondelpark pavilion, and in good weather this park can rival the best spots anywhere in the world. Vondelpark 3, Amsterdam
In Amsterdam-West
Café Saté
At Hugo de Grootplein, you can walk laps around the roundabout past several lovely establishments. On a corner towards the Jordaan sits Café Saté, with cosy outdoor benches piled with colourful cushions. Naturally, you can eat satay here (including vegetarian tempeh satay), but you can also enjoy drinks with bitterballen and beers. Hugo de Grootplein 1, Amsterdam
In Amsterdam-Oost/Zeeburg
Het Parool recommends no fewer than three terraces in Amsterdam-Oost, so this is the district to be this summer! Here they are:
Zeeuw & Schot
No slices of liver sausage and budget beer here, but fine dining complemented by cocktails and/or whisky. Alongside American Chelsea Whitaker, who handles the art in the space and the marketing, the team consists of chef Randy Karman from Zeeland (the Zeeuw in the name), who earned a Michelin star as chef of The White Room, and James Chaib from Glasgow (the Schot, or Scotsman). Chaib is the brains behind the establishment’s drinks menu, and with his title of Best Bartender in the Netherlands in 2019, that should be in very good hands too. Rietlandpark 373, Amsterdam
Bar Bachrach
This is the little sister of beloved restaurant Wilde Zwijnen, located next door on Javaplein. The menu features Middle Eastern and Spanish influences, with a cosy, aesthetic atmosphere where you can choose between small dishes or an extensive dinner. Party time! Javaplein 25, Amsterdam
Bardita
It’s incredibly colourful, and the atmosphere will probably be lively from the moment you arrive to eat, after knocking back your complimentary shot of tequila at the door. The menu features Mexican dishes and snacks, as well as no fewer than seven different tequila cocktails. Even if you come in in a foul mood, something tells us you won’t be able to maintain it for long at Bardita. Beukenplein 3, Amsterdam
