Fish fingers with peanut butter or toasted sandwiches with maple syrup: some people make the craziest combinations in their food. And when we published an article about it, the reactions on Facebook were even more exciting than the article itself. Hence: these crazy combinations from our readers. Anita: ‘Toasted sandwich with satay sauce, delicious!’
Don’t forget the satay sauce
Maria Anna notices that something is missing from the list of unusual combinations. ‘It’s not in there, but: cheese soufflé with satay sauce, oof.’ And satay sauce is a favorite among more people, including our regular reader Anita: ‘Toasted sandwich with satay sauce, also delicious!’ Sonja says it can get even crazier. ‘I used to work in a snack bar, and every week a boy would come in for a split with satay sauce.’
Deliciously savory
If Anja wants to eat a rusk with you, you won’t get strawberries or cheese, but something very special: ‘Spread it with mayonnaise and then put pickled pearl onions on top.’ Unforgettable, that’s for sure.
Tingelinge pancake
Marion loves pancakes with cheese. Is that strange? No, but: ‘With powdered sugar on top. I’m already craving it again.’ Lorna’s suggestion: pancake syrup instead of powdered sugar. Marion? ‘No, I tried that, but I really didn’t like it as much.’
Croquette, but different
Even a classic snack gets a makeover from Nicola: ‘Croquettes crushed and mixed with applesauce and pieces of pineapple. Delicious!’ Marianne takes it one step further: ‘Hollow out a croquette with a teaspoon, eat the filling, and then fill the croquette with applesauce and eat it.’ Dimi goes all out: ‘Crush croquettes, mix in a little juice from cold pears, a little mayo and ketchup.’ Nicola is lyrical: ‘What great tips!’
Double cheese
‘Everyone thinks it’s strange that I eat a peanut butter and cheese sandwich. To me it made perfect sense, because double cheese is always a good thing,’ writes Sanne. She’s not the only one: Nick also likes that peanut butter with cheese. And then briefly put it on the grill.’ And Rina advises Nick to spread a little sambal on his peanut butter-and-banana toasted sandwich. Sandra takes a different approach with peanut butter: she spreads it on a slice of ontbijtkoek. Hmm, that doesn’t sound so crazy after all!
Smoked sausage
Applesauce pairs surprisingly well with things, judging by the reactions. We’ve already come across a croquette shell filled with applesauce, and Alisandra recommends ‘Smoked sausage with applesauce, that is DELICIOUS.’ Eefje’s mother eats applesauce with… chocolate custard. ‘Horror, horror,’ writes Eefje, so that apple didn’t fall far from the tree. Marie serves Pringles with applesauce. Tessa is amazed: ‘My applesauce, curry and mayo mixture isn’t even the worst.’
Beans with syrup
Speaking of strange combinations, Daphne knows all about them. ‘People looked at me funny when I poured pancake syrup over my brown beans.’ Nothing strange about that, Daphne. Crista: ‘We did that at home too!’ Ina recognizes it as well: ‘Brown beans with bacon and pickles. And syrup… delicious.’ Frouke: ‘That’s completely normal, right? Delicious! Capuchin peas with bacon, onion, gherkin, piccalilli and pancake syrup.’ Suzanne makes it even crazier: she adds mayonnaise.
On your sandwich
Janneke spreads mayonnaise on her sandwich and then casually sprinkles fruit sprinkles over it. How about it, Janneke? ‘It’s still delicious,’ she says. And Aletta adds: ‘Only with white bread.’ Because this would be really disgusting on brown bread?
