No Michelin-starred restaurant has a chalkboard on the pavement, and no respectable cocktail bar advertises itself with a lame joke – yet we’d walk straight into these restaurants and bars, because their advertising is genuinely funny.

In America, they’re really good at it: those funny signs displayed outside—especially—fast-food restaurants. Restaurant El Arroyo has become world-famous for them, in any case more famous for them than for its Mexican dishes.

And while a supposedly funny (ahem) menu mainly causes irritation, these chalkboards really are funny.
