One thing you definitely don’t want when you’re hosting a large group of guests: spending ages in the kitchen. And no complicated dishes please. Large one-pot dishes are perfect, as are dishes where guests can still do something themselves at the table. That saves you a lot of work. We took both into account when putting together this list.

Christmas main courses for 10 people

1. Risotto al Barolo

A big pot of risotto is ideal for making for a large group. It’s not exactly rocket science, you can easily divide the portions and it’s a filling dish. Plus: absolutely delicious. Especially when you make risotto al Barolo. Barolo is a wonderful Italian red wine. It gives the risotto a rich, deep flavour. Top the risotto with some blue cheese. Sensationally good!

2. Cheese fondue

Picture this: you’ve just been on a wintry walk with your group of guests. You all come back inside with frozen noses. And then… cheese fondue! Cheese fondue is a perfect main course for 10 people. Everyone decides for themselves what they dip in the cheese. Some delicious wine to go with it, chatting and having fun… An evening like that simply flies by.

3. Fideuà: a quick paella

Christmas with a Spanish twist! Fideuà is a type of paella. Just as flavourful, but ready much faster. That’s because you don’t use rice, but a type of short noodle—fideuà, in other words. At least you don’t have to worry about spending hours in the kitchen and missing out on the fun at the table. Put two large pans on the table, get a nice Spanish wine and you’ll have a wonderful Christmas together.

4. Seafood boil

Have you invited lovers of shellfish and crustaceans? Then you’ll give them an unforgettable Christmas if you make a seafood boil. In short, it’s a whole lot of seasoned shellfish and crustaceans together. But that doesn’t do it justice. It’s soul food, food you share, food that brings you closer together. No, a seafood boil won’t make for a fancy-schmancy Christmas dinner. But it will be one you’ll want to lick your fingers after. Literally.

5. Pasta with onion ragù and parsley breadcrumbs

Want to serve the ultimate comfort food this Christmas? This pasta with onion ragù and parsley breadcrumbs by Vanja van der Leeden is perfect, especially for large groups. The ingredient list is short but packed with serious flavour boosters. Think white wine, miso paste and Worcestershire sauce. If you double the quantities in the recipe, you’ll have enough to make everyone at the table happy in no time.

6. Gourmetten

Yes, yes, an old favourite that simply had to be included in this list. Especially if you’re having around 10 people over for Christmas. Put two tabletop gourmet grills on the table, plenty of tasty food and matching wines, and the rest speaks for itself. Oh, some extra tips for preventing gourmet-grill smells might also come in handy. Especially when you come downstairs hungover the next morning and the smell of burnt mini burgers makes you feel sick.

7. Grilled BBQ rack of lamb

The idea that barbecuing is a summer activity is old and outdated. Why not take your grill buddy out of the shed in winter too? You can grill racks of lamb on it, for example. Delicious with a seasoned crust. Two racks of lamb are enough to provide the group with wonderfully tender meat. Add a salad and oven-roasted potatoes and you have a flavourful main course for 10 people.

8. Boeuf bourguignon

Boeuf bourguignon is another gem in the comfort food category. You can easily make a pot like this in the morning and let it simmer gently on the stove all day. Then you don’t need to pay it any further attention. Letting it cook for a long time over low heat is actually the best way to make your stew, because that allows all the flavours to develop beautifully. Serve it with fries or mashed potatoes and those 10 guests will suddenly fall completely silent. Bet?

9. Friettafelen

A cult classic from Brabant that has now spread beyond the province’s borders. Forget strict dress codes, elegantly set tables and fancy plated dishes. This is the complete opposite. All you need is aluminium foil, a few deep fryers, fries, snacks and sauces of your choice. The aluminium foil serves as both tablecloth and plates. All you have to do is throw the fried snacks and fries onto the table. One thing is certain: you’ve never had so little washing-up after a Christmas dinner.
