An Ode to the Indonesian Croquette

Instagram phenomenon @snackspert, dipped in mayonnaise as Eke Bosman, tells you where to get the best snacks, from shawarma rolls to lihanboutjes. This time, he recommends a seriously delicious croquette with an Indonesian twist.

You can pull them straight from the snack wall or make them yourself. Eat them on a cake or with pasta, decorate the Christmas tree with them or dip them in ketchup. Whatever you do with them, as far as we’re concerned, the croquette is part of the Netherlands’ cultural heritage. But the crispy snack filled with meat ragout comes in many varieties. Including this Indonesian croquette, which truly deserves a place of its own in the snack bar.
An Ode to the Indonesian Croquette
Strangely enough, the Indonesian croquette doesn’t have a regular spot on the snack team at the average cafeteria, but it is available at various toko’s, including Toko Makassar in Amsterdam Nieuw-West. And that’s both a shame and a good thing, because on the one hand I’d love to see it elsewhere, while on the other, it’s a good reason to visit the toko. What makes it so delicious? Well, as you’d expect from Indonesian dishes, the filling of chicken and potato(!) is wonderfully seasoned, so you don’t need any sauce to give your mouth a little kick—absolutely fantastic. The only downside is that it had been sitting in the display case for a long time and therefore didn’t have a crispy edge, but luckily the flavor makes up for a lot. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
