Burger King puts very special fries on the menu: would you order them?

If there’s one thing we’ve seen a lot of this year, it’s pickles. Pickles have appeared in chocolate letters, oliebollen, cheese, liver sausage, push-up ice creams; the list goes on. Did we think this was only happening in the Netherlands? Of course not! Burger King in America is now introducing pickle fries—in other words, fried pickles.

Warning: if pickles make you pull a sour face because you’re completely fed up with them, this may not be your thing.

Crispy and a little floppy

The pickle fries are exactly what you think they are: thinly sliced, long pickles that are fried until crispy. Naturally, they don’t get crispy on their own. That’s why the pickles are dipped in a seasoned batter. They’re a lovely golden brown color, although some social media videos do show that they hang a little… pathetically. Don’t you think?

No fries without sauce, which is why the pickle fries are served with Hidden Valley Ranch sauce. It’s especially popular in America. It’s a kind of mildly tangy, herby mayonnaise. Undoubtedly a very good combination with the tangy, crispy pickle fries. In America, people are very enthusiastic about them, at least. The pickle fries score highly in test videos on Instagram and TikTok: we see plenty of 7.5/10 and 8/10 ratings. That’s no limp offering!

How to make pickle fries yourself

Too bad: the pickle fries don’t (yet) seem to be on the menu at Dutch Burger King locations. I wouldn’t be surprised if that changes soon, because thanks to Kesbeke, the group of pickle junkies in the Netherlands is growing. Really can’t wait to try them? Luckily, they’re very easy to make. And since we’re not sourpusses ourselves, of course we’ll share the recipe with you.
