Fantastic: Waldorf’s New Afternoon Tea (and at a Great Price, Too)
There’s a new edition of the renowned Afternoon Tea at the Waldorf Astoria hotel in Amsterdam. And believe me: you don’t want to miss it. Because the savory and sweet treats served here are nothing short of delicious works of art.
I love going to hotels in my own city. It always feels a bit like a mini vacation. Cocktail bars in hotels are often fantastic (and pricey too, but still cheaper than catching a plane). But at some hotels, you can also enjoy a lovely break between breakfast and dinner, during a special Afternoon Tea where tea flows generously between three and five in the afternoon. With adorable accompanying treats, of course.
Pinky up
British hotels have always offered Afternoon Tea. Although the phenomenon originally emerged in society salons, in its heyday people went to a hotel for this gathering with a pot of tea and a tiered stand full of sweet and savory treats. Forget having ‘high tea’ in a simple café setting, because Afternoon Tea—with silver, porcelain, damask and your pinky up—is completely hot. And if you’ve been to the Afternoon Tea at the Waldorf, you’ll understand why: this really is the most beautiful one in Amsterdam.
With Dolce&Gabbana
The Afternoon Tea, created by pastry chef Vipin Charly, is a collaboration between the Waldorf and Italian fashion house Dolce&Gabbana. It simply has to be colorful and luxurious—and the savory and sweet treats are exactly that. Each treat is even more beautiful than the last, and they taste incredible! How about Parmesan cheese foam with smoked eel, focaccia with wood-roasted octopus and artichoke? Lemon with limoncello, basil and baba, amaretto cake with almond cream…
And these beautiful treats are, of course, accompanied by top-of-the-line Place Vendôme tea. You finish with scones, those delicious British baked goods that fall somewhere between a little cake and a bread roll.
Tip: book quickly
The Afternoon Tea is available from Friday through Sunday from 3:00–5:00 p.m. in the iconic Peacock Alley. Alongside tea and treats, there is live piano music.
