Find the best snack bar near you with this guide

A good snack can make your day, so we’re more than happy with the fortnightly reviews by in-house snacker Snackspert. That’s how you find out where he ate the best Turkish pizza ever, and what he thinks of the vegan fish sticks from Albert Heijn (spoiler: delicious!). And if you follow him on social media, you’ll know that he conducts his tests all over the country. I wonder whether he’ll now also use this guide to search for the best snack bar in the country.

ProFri (the Association of Professional Fryers) and the Dutch Frying Centre have once again published their annual Nationale Smulgids, featuring frying establishments that are “worth taking a detour for”. This list isn’t entirely independent, since all snack bars affiliated with ProFri are automatically included, and all entrepreneurs with the Goed Gefrituurd and/or Met Goud Bekroond quality mark can register themselves (or have themselves registered), after which a “snack inspector” pays them an assessment visit. But it is explicitly not a ranking: according to the Smulgids, **all** the establishments mentioned are worth your visit!
Here they do their best
So we can’t really call it a Michelin Guide, but it’s always useful to know whether a particular snack bar owner is doing their best in the categories ‘Craftsmanship, Safety, Hygiene and Responsibility’. For each province or city, the Smulgids clearly maps out which cafeterias and snack bars stand out in a special way.
Snacking your way across the country
A selection from the list:
- De Krab in Krabbendijke
- De Vesting in Appingedam
- De Toren in Castricum
- ’t Kruuspunt in Ballum
- FrieteRia in Dronten
- Meuleplein in Nijeveen
- Emmy in Slagharen
- Marktzicht in Beusichem
- Galecop in Nieuwegein
- ’t Pleintje in Etten-Leur
- De Eethoek in De Lier
- Het Smulhuis in Brunssum
Conveniently searchable by city
These are all frying businesses that have their affairs in order according to the Smulgids, and are therefore more than worthy of your patronage. In any case, I’m craving some fries—what would you go for first? A ‘sustainable’ frikandel? Or perhaps a ‘mysterious’ kaassoufflé? Either way, with the Smulgids, you’ll at least know where your croquette or whatever else is fried with care. Here you’ll find the handy complete guide!
