‘Gems’ from Marktplaats that make you think: “who wants this?!”

Marktplaats-Favorflav

You can keep being amazed: people trying to sell the most unbelievable junk through Marktplaats. Because why would you buy two tea towels through Marktplaats, for example, used spatulas, or a dirty stove? Some things are better not bought second-hand, like these Marktplaats ‘gems’.

Are you consuming less, watching your budget, or simply enjoying buying used things? Then you can strike gold on Marktplaats and in thrift shops. Beautiful old crockery, an antique tablecloth, or copper pans that shine like gold again after polishing: if you have an eye for it, you can find the loveliest things second-hand. But if you’re hunting for kitchenware, you’re really better off leaving these items alone. Oh, and do you have ambitions to sell things yourself? Then pay attention to exactly what you put in the photo (snicker).

Non-stick pans

If they have been used, there is a good chance the Teflon coating has been damaged. You don’t notice it immediately, but the non-stick coating then releases tiny particles. And those end up in your food… And that is terribly bad for you. So leave those second-hand non-stick pans alone, and replace your own pans at home regularly too.

Refrigerator

With a second-hand refrigerator, you run the risk of expensive repairs, especially if it’s one of those large American-style refrigerators. They start rattling and buzzing, or the ice maker no longer works properly. Moreover, an older refrigerator’s energy consumption is much higher than a new one’s.

Tea towels

Wash them piping hot if you buy them second-hand, because damp textiles and kitchen towels that aren’t used often can contain mold or strange bacteria. And why on earth would you want to buy second-hand tea towels? New ones cost next to nothing, so just head to Hema when you can again.

Things that become blunt

A kitchen knife becomes blunt after being used for a while. Of course, you can have it sharpened, but with a used knife you run the risk of large burrs and sizable chips in the blade. Naturally, you don’t know how carefully someone treated their knife… And did you know that the blades of a blender or food processor also become blunt with use? Even a stick blender becomes considerably less effective over time. So don’t bid on them.

Old plastic containers

It’s also quite unbelievable that you would choose to take over someone’s second-hand Tupperware, but anyway. Bear in mind that old plastic containers may contain plasticizers that are no longer permitted today. And did you know that a whole stack of plastic containers at Ikea costs just a few euros? Consuming less is great, but you can overdo it too. We wish you lots of fun browsing this (sometimes downright hilarious!) gold mine.
