Got a cold? (A little) hot whisky helps

When you have a cold, do you ever feel the urgent need to numb yourself just a tiny little bit? Just so you don’t have to feel 100 percent anymore what a pathetic heap of misery you actually are with your blocked, bright-red nose, watery eyes and uncontrollable sneezing fits?

Feelin’ (not so) hot
We get it. Enter: hot whisky. Your (my) grandma was absolutely right to always offer a hot toddy as soon as someone nearby started sniffling. A classic hot toddy, made with whisky, lemon juice, honey and hot water can, thanks to the heat and steam, help loosen and relieve things around your nasal and sinus cavities. Raising your temperature yourself also works a little like a fever would: a warm body produces antibodies more effectively. The alcohol may also help you fall asleep a little faster and, honestly, when you have the flu or a cold, wouldn’t you rather miss a large part of it? Besides, a little indulgence is certainly justified at a time like that.
In moderation
Butttt…! Before you hide that whisky bottle under your blanket so you can quietly sip from it all day long – hold on, stop. There is nothing that cures a cold except time. And you know perfectly well that too much alcohol is never a good idea, because it dehydrates your body, and you obviously don’t want to inflict that horrible dehydrated feeling after a night of heavy drinking on your sick body.
So you dutifully balance that ONE hot toddy with plenty of other fluids alongside it; tea, water, chicken soup – throughout the day. We feel for you. Sniff!
