Great: Lidl Sweden stops transporting vegetables and fruit by plane
A world first: finally, a country that has decided to stop using import flights for its vegetables and fruit. With sustainability and the environment in mind. Lidl Sweden announced this week that, after thoroughly analyzing its import flights, it no longer considered it responsible to continue using them for its vegetables and fruit.
Great, right? A wonderful example that will hopefully be adopted by several other countries. Lidl Sweden had already been working hard in recent years to reduce these import flights, but has now decided to stop them altogether. To announce this, they bought an advertisement in the Swedish morning newspaper Dagens Nyheter. Seriously: I think this is one of the most brilliant advertisements in a long time.
Lidl Sweden has been committed to a better environment for years
In its efforts to provide customers with vegetables and fruit while consciously caring for the environment, Lidl Sweden already largely used electric trucks in 2020 to supply its stores with products. I’m very curious to see whether several other countries (perhaps Lidl will be the first there too?) will follow this wonderful example. In the Netherlands, they are already working hard to combat food waste: since 2020, more than 1.3 million Too Good To Go boxes have been sold. Lidl, I already thought you were a fantastic supermarket, but I’ve become an even bigger fan.
