Groundbreaking! These dissolvable tablets are turning the soft-drink industry upside down

Staying hydrated is healthy, but you’re getting sick of the sight of water, and two liters of soft drink a day isn’t exactly good for you either. That problem gave Martin Donald Murray an idea: waterdrops, dissolvable tablets that you drop into a bottle of water and presto, you have a delicious cold drink. ‘There are little rovers driving around Mars, so why is the soft-drink industry still the same as it was seventy years ago?’

Innovation in the soft-drink industry? Hmmm, Martin Donald Murray doesn’t really see it. ‘A new bottle, a new flavor, but I don’t see any real innovation,’ he tells Business Insider. ‘All they do is put water and sugar in plastic bottles. I think that’s stupid. It’s pretty remarkable, too, in a world where we talk about cryptocurrency and traveling to Mars, that such a huge industry has been the same for seventy years.’
From the tap
Plain tap water—that’s the innovation in the soft-drink world, according to Murray. He developed cubes that dissolve in tap water and transform an ordinary glass of municipal water into a tasty soft drink. That means less plastic, fewer fully loaded trucks driving from one place to another, and fewer kilos on your bikini body, because Murray’s cubes are packed with herbs, fruit and plant extracts but contain zero sugar.
Design is everything
Waterdrops, Murray’s company, started six years ago in Austria and is now gradually conquering all of Europe. Design and sustainability play the leading roles: the tablets look incredible and the flavors resemble no soft drink you can buy in the supermarket, with crazy combinations such as cherry blossom, mallow and ginseng or kola nut, charcoal, guarana and blackberry. Available online, of course, and the webshop also sells reusable straws, beautiful glass bottles and carafes.
Squash, but different
Well, well, isn’t this just the same as lemonade? Maybe so, but the bizarre flavors certainly aren’t found among the bottles of squash on the supermarket shelf. What’s more, customer reviews say the flavors are less sweet than regular lemonades. It sounds interesting enough to try, and we’re immediately getting ideas for daring cocktails and long drinks too. Because if you can dissolve one of these tablets in a bottle of water, surely it will work in a bottle of vodka as well? Cheers to the soft-drink revolution!
