Happy new week: HEMA launches vegetarian smoked sausage ‘OokWorst’

Eating no (or less) meat has just become a little more fun and easier. Because the famous and beloved HEMA smoked sausage is now also available as a vegetarian variety. What is this sausage called? OokWorst. Smoked sausage without the ‘r’ is OokWorst, according to HEMA.

So what’s in it?
HEMA’s vegetarian smoked sausage is made with plant-based oils, pea fiber and free-range egg and pea protein, making it 100% vegetarian. Plop it on a delicious stamppot, or go all out and put it in a white bread roll with a dollop of HEMA’s hot dog sauce, which in my opinion is the very best mustard sauce there is. And that famous HEMA hot dog sauce is also sold separately, in a squeeze bottle.
Vacuum-packed
HEMA has not commented on whether the vegetarian sausage, like HEMA’s regular smoked sausage, is also made by Unox. Unlike the regular smoked sausage, which you can simply grab from the shelf, the vegetarian variety is sold in a vacuum package. “The regular smoked sausage is heated in a pan of water. Of course, we can’t put the vegetarian one in there as well,” says HEMA’s spokesperson.

Even more vegetarian ‘sausage’ at HEMA
All of HEMA’s well-known food products should eventually get a vegan version. There is already a vegan apple crumble pie for sale, and vegan versions of HEMA’s hot dogs are now available too. Like the regular hot dogs, you can buy the vegetable hot dogs in a DIY package for home. If we are heading into another full lockdown, you’ll know what to stock up on…
Feeling hungry?
Go to a HEMA near you and grab one of these vegetarian sausages (the sausage costs € 3,50). And while you’re there, check whether they still have those crazy smoked-sausage-flavored chips!
