When two iconic elements come together for an anniversary, it can result in spectacular fireworks. That is certainly the case with the 150th anniversary of Hennessy X.O cognac and world-famous architect Frank Gehry, who designed something spectacular for this special occasion…

A stunning (literally, too) gold-and-bronze bottle containing the godly drink. Frank Gehry, who among other things designed the Guggenheim Bilbao, is now ninety-one (!) and is still designing away with gusto. That can safely be called a miracle, and the makers of the renowned cognac house are therefore greatly honored by the collaboration. And Gehry, in turn, feels exactly the same!

Illustrious architect

Gehry earned his Bachelor’s degree in architecture in Los Angeles and then joined the US Army. After his military service, government assistance for veterans who wanted to continue their studies enabled him to earn his Master’s at Harvard. The beginning of a long, successful career and countless awards. He considers it “an honor to be asked to celebrate this milestone for Hennessy X.O,” and drew inspiration from the birthplace in the Cognac region of the drink of the same name: the rich soil, the winding vines (did you know, by the way, that there are also vines for your home?!) and the shimmering Charente River. The design should convey radiant movement, and of course plenty of bold luxury.

For an illustrious drink

Hennessy X.O has achieved the impressive status of being regarded as an excellent cognac by both the old and new generations. It is drunk by respectable old gentlemen with cigars in the libraries of ancient societies, but thanks to a strong connection with art and music, also by hipsters in da club. The Roots, Nas and Tom Dixon, for example, have collaborated with the brand, which first perfected this elegant blend in 1870. Various eaux-de-vie formed the basis of the intensely amber-colored blend that from that moment on was called X.O, or Extra Old.

Celebrate

That mega-exclusive 24-karat gold-and-bronze bottle, also wrapped in a stand made of glittering broken glass, was produced in a very limited edition. One hundred and fifty signed bottles/artworks, one for each year of the cognac’s life. For the slightly less (but still very) lucky few, Gehry designed another edition: the somewhat wider limited-edition release. This is a gold-colored ombré version of the original bottle that symbolizes an inverted bunch of grapes. This anniversary edition is available in the Netherlands in a run of two hundred bottles at better liquor stores. So, do you love cognac and want to enjoy an iconic design by a living legend? Turn your piggy bank upside down and run to the store with a hundred and eighty euros or so!
