Here you can get the tastiest almond pastry in the Netherlands

He did it: Wouter Vroonland won the national almond pastry competition. So at his bakery in Yerseke, you can officially buy the tastiest almond pastries in the entire Netherlands. How happy is Wouter? ‘This prize was at the top of my wish list,’ he tells the reporter from the Provinciale Zeeuwse Courant (PZC).

Wouter spent a long time practicing making the perfect almond pastry. Until he probably couldn’t stand the sight of them anymore. But it paid off, because the jury is lyrical. ‘One of the nicest compliments I read in the jury report was that I had made such a beautifully neat pastry,’ he says in the newspaper. But the jury was especially impressed by the inside of Wouter’s pastry: it is perfectly baked, and the almond paste inside is delicious.

Bakers from across the Netherlands

The baker from Yerseke enjoys a competition; he has also taken part in the competition for the best oliebollen and the tastiest Christmas stollen, but the almond pastry is his favorite. ‘Everything has to be done very precisely,’ he says. ‘If one thing isn’t quite right, the result immediately suffers.’ He’d better prepare himself, because the almond pastries will probably be flying off the shelves. Sixty-six bakers from across the Netherlands took part in the competition, and nine almond pastries made it to the final.
