High tea dowdy? Not with these tips!
I’m crazy about cake, pie, muffins and scones. I confess: basically anything that’s loaded with sugar. So a high tea should, in principle, be right up my alley, except for its dowdy image. Sound familiar? Then make the best of it and simply have high tea at home during the coronavirus crisis, give it your own theme, order whatever you like and eat everything yourself.
High tea with one of those tiered stands? No, I’d rather have a high tea with an edgy twist. With a Mexican sugar skull theme and hardcore hard rock blasting from the speakers. I’ll replace the tea with homemade iced tea or, let me be honest right away, Jäger tea and voila: goodbye dowdiness. And from there I’ll continue with what it’s all about: getting high on my own sweet supply! Here’s where I get the best ones in Amsterdam.
Macarons
A high tea without macarons is like a high frikandel without frikandellen. At Tout Patisserie, they’re experts at making macarons. With more than 20 different varieties, there’s plenty to choose from. Besides classic flavors such as vanilla and salty caramel, they also have unusual flavors like mint and olive oil, salmiak and truffle. Perfect, then, for anything but a standard high tea. Pie
Holtkamp owes its fame not only to the veal croquette; the patisserie section is also excellent. Savory or sweet: everything here is delicious. Essential at my high tea: the lemon meringue and banana puff. And those Javaantjes cheese biscuits? Add them immediately for drinks. You can’t order online here, but the bike ride there is a perfect idea for working off the sugar overload that follows.

Cookies
You’ll find the best chocolate chip cookies in New York, but these Dutch cookies from Sea Salt & Chocolate are at least as delicious. At Sea Salt & Chocolate, you can simply order online via Deliveroo, Uber Eats and Thuisbezorgd. If you’re lucky, they’ll still be warm when they arrive! Definitely order the M&M cookie, filled with choco M&M’s, and the red velvet version. These are hard to resist—or, in my case, simply impossible.
