How many sausage rolls do you have to eat to gain a kilo?

Half of Brabant and Limburg are still recovering from Carnival. That also means recovering from all those sausage rolls. Because if the Carnival hits, beers and conga lines ramp up in the south of the country, so do the sausage rolls. And we have a fun question: how many sausage rolls do you actually have to eat to gain a kilo?

Sausage rolls come in all shapes and sizes. I think very few people have the energy during Carnival to bake sausage rolls themselves—although that is of course the tastiest option. No, I think most people in the south got their sausage rolls from the bakery or the supermarket last weekend. (Amsterdammers know: you can get the city’s tastiest sausage rolls here. But I don’t believe people from Brabant or Limburg drove all the way to the capital to shop for the snack there.)
Let’s do the math: how many sausage rolls to gain 1 kilo?
For some of our Carnival-celebrating readers, I’ll apologize in advance. Maybe you don’t want to know at all how many kilos you may have gained after all those sausage rolls. And beers… And Flügels… And fries… Let me start by saying this: as long as you had a good time. The salads, green smoothies and vitamin pills will come again soon enough.
So we’re going to do the math anyway. Because secretly, it is kind of fun to know how many sausage rolls you have to eat to gain a kilo, right? Well, to gain one kilo in the first place, you have to eat 7,000 kilocalories. Spread that over the week, and you would have to eat 1,000 kilocalories per day on top of the usual 2,000 (women) or 2,500 (men) kilocalories you need each day. According to Het Voedingscentrum, a 75-gram sausage roll contains 286 calories. That means you have to eat approximately 24.5 sausage rolls to gain one kilo. And that is on top of your normal diet. Converted, that is about 3.5 sausage rolls per day for a week. Carnival revelers: did you manage that last week?
Gaining kilos, losing minutes
So you have to put away quite a lot of sausage rolls if you want to see the number on the scale go up. But hey, those things are so damn delicious… I completely understand if you can’t stay away from them. As for the possibility that we’re sacrificing a few minutes of our lives, as is also the case with hot dog buns, let’s not think about that for now.
Also good to know, especially with Easter coming up: this is how many chocolate Easter eggs you have to eat to gain one kilo. At least you’ll know whether you need to hide them extra well.
