Where to get the tastiest sausage rolls in Amsterdam

worstenbroodjes The Genius Amsterdam

Instagram phenomenon @snackspert, known in mayonnaise as Eke Bosman, ate an excellent sausage roll. And that north of the rivers, no less! At The Genius in Amsterdam, you’ll find the city’s most authentic sausage rolls.

You no longer have to travel to Brabant for the tastiest sausage rolls. Whether you’re craving an authentic sausage roll or a deluxe version with all kinds of toppings, you’ll find it all at The Genius. For dedicated athletes, there’s the ‘sport chicken’ with 20g of protein, wrapped in whole-wheat dough. Prefer low-carb? That’s possible too: go for the hearty sausage roll with minced chicken, seeds and kernels for extra bite.

Luxury sausage rolls

Sausage rolls in Amsterdam—Snackspert obviously had to try them. He ordered ‘Het Amsterdammertje’ with beef sausage and Zaanse mustard mayo. To put it mildly, it did not disappoint.

I’m already looking forward to the reactions to this review, because there’s now a sausage-roll shop in the capital that sells luxury versions alongside the traditional ones. Is that sacrilege? Sauce on a sausage roll is already debatable to some, so how would people react to a luxury version? One plus: the rolls themselves come from Houben Worstenbrood, a well-known family business from Brabant. And they’re certainly tasty—the pork-mince sausage rolls are perfectly good. The roll you see in the photo is an Amsterdammertje. I thought, I’ll go for this one, because naturally I want the product with the greatest contrast. With beef sausage, pickled onions and Zaanse mustard mayonnaise. A good, pleasing combination of flavours. The beef sausage is wonderfully soft and fresh, and the pickled onions are sour enough. Good choice to go for Zaanse mustard mayonnaise too, because that way it’s not too sharp and not too creamy. I love balance. But how does it work on a sausage roll? Perhaps a little too full for the mouth—even experienced nature-documentary actors might struggle with it. It’s certainly very tasty, but it’s not quite as brilliant an invention as the kapsalon. Still, I’m curious about the rest of the menu, because I think it’s a very interesting development. Already curious to hear your opinion on this. ⭐⭐⭐⭐
