How to still turn your Sunday into a Sunday Funday despite coronavirus

Sunday is my favorite day of the week. The entire day revolves around crossing the city in search of the most delicious food and drinks. But because of coronavirus, everyone has to improvise—including me. This is how I tackle corona Sunday.

Sunday Funday

Sundays are very important to me, and I usually spend them consuming a lot: having an extensive brunch with an uitsmijter and the city’s most delicious Bloody Marys at Piet de Gruyter, eating dim sum at Oriental City…. I then like to round off my Sunday evenings at Café Restaurant Amsterdam. Unfortunately, none of this has been possible since March 15, 2020—the sad day the hospitality industry closed. But fortunately, thanks to the many take-away and delivery initiatives, a corona-proof Sunday Funday is easy to achieve.

A coffee to start the day

Start your day right with a cup of coffee. During my first few days of quarantine, I kept feeling like something was missing, but I didn’t know what. And then suddenly, I dreamed about it: a delicious cappuccino. Fortunately, my favorite summer hangout, Paaseiland, has reopened despite everything. For now, only for takeaway coffee. Delicious white-label double-shot cappuccinos, with a view of Amsterdam’s IJ. Perfect. An extra perk: loyalty cards are available. Full loyalty card? Free coffee!

Brunch

On Sundays, I always skip breakfast (to some extent); instead, I enjoy a delicious brunch. What have I learned thanks to coronavirus? Brunch at home can be wonderful! My best discovery for a home brunch is Mas, from Broodje aan de deur. She bakes the most delicious organic sourdough breads with lots of love, and even delivers them to your home by bicycle! Perfect for your Sunday brunch. Add some eggs, a delicious tuna salad made with all your canned-food hoarding, perhaps pick up scones at De Bakkerswinkel or delicious apple pie at Waargenoegen. See what’s happening in your neighborhood and enjoy yourself!

Dinner

Delivery, takeaway—the best restaurants are delivering now, and that’s actually something to celebrate. My favorite for a delicious Sunday? Pop-up pizza and pasta restaurant Klaproos in Amsterdam Noord. A three-course pasta package including wine for two people for just € 50. Great! Including, among other things, this delicious ravioli!

A drink to go with it

A delicious Sunday naturally goes hand in hand with a delicious drink. For example, stop by Café Goldmund, which has transformed its brand-new restaurant into a liquor store. Or visit Angolo Vinoso for delicious natural wines. Of course, order cocktails from Flying Dutchmen! Really in the mood for a wild night at home? Amsterdam institution café Pollux delivers bottles of Salmari!

This is how I manage to get through my Sundays. How about you?
