I asked (star) chefs where they most like to eat out

Ever since I could talk, I’ve been asking questions. Good questions, silly questions (because yes, those definitely do exist), strange questions and useful questions. I do that in this feature too. Ask questions. To (star) chefs. A different one every week. Not a different chef, but a different question. This week: where do you most like to eat out?

Schilo van Coevorden (Taiko): “Oriental City on Oudezijds Voorburgwal—they have the most authentic, best dim sum in the city. I’ve been going there all my life; back then, there were only Chinese people there. There’s a Japanese restaurant on Kostverlorenhof called Ichi, where I like to eat okonomiyaki and noodles.”
Michiel van der Eerde (BAUT, ZUID, C): “At friends’ restaurants, because you don’t have to make a reservation there.”
Jacob Jan Boerma (De Leest ***): “I do that too rarely, but I continue to love Spanish cuisine, partly because of its price-quality ratio and the incredible freshness of the produce; it often inspires me too.”
Pascal Jalhay: “All over the world, in Chinatowns, at little markets and in people’s homes. Sometimes at the highest level too, but you don’t have to travel across the world for that. Authentic dishes are my passion.”
Freek van Noortwijk (including Breda, Guts & Glory, Maris Piper): “Bak, Choux and Rijks—all restaurants with a good, distinctive, progressive style. They serve flavorful dishes and work a lot with Dutch products.”
Soenil Bahadoer (De Lindehof **): “Lovely little places where they cook traditionally, including abroad. How do I know whether it’s a good restaurant? The first impression tells you a lot, then you simply taste the food—that way, you know quickly enough.”
Joris Bijdendijk (RIJKS *): “I prefer to eat at home, but when I go out, I enjoy eating at the restaurants of friends who are chefs and hosts. There are plenty of them—think Merijn van Berlo (Choux), Ard Muntjewerf (The Lobby), Freek and Guillaume (Breda or Maris Piper) and Alain Caron (Café Caron).”
Edwin Vinke (De Kromme Watergang **): “With friends—we have little free time, so I prefer to spend whatever free time I do have with friends.”
Jonnie Boer (De Librije ***): “As long as it tastes good. I like to be inspired. That can even be by a meatball sandwich.”
Sergio Herman (including The Jane**, Pure C, Frites Atelier): “I have my go-to addresses depending on my mood, the company or the occasion. Authenticity comes first for me, and you can find that in the atmosphere, the quality of the food or the service.”
Onno Kokmeijer (Ciel Bleu **): “Seafoodbar; fruits de mer with a good glass of wine.”
Arjan Speelman (Ciel Bleu **): “Oriental City; enjoying dim sum there on a Sunday.”
