Jumbo gives away tape to combat food waste

Today marks the start of No Food Waste Week, and various supermarkets are joining in. Albert Heijn, for example, introduced the look, smell and taste logo on packaging, while supermarket chain Jumbo is giving away ‘Eat First’ tape. This helps reduce food waste by more than a quarter.

On average, people in the Netherlands throw away more than 33 kilos of food and 64 litres of drinks per person per year. Such a waste! Especially because these are often products that are still perfectly safe to consume. In any case, many products past their expiry date are still perfectly fine to eat. For people who become paranoid about the best-before date: by clearly marking leftovers and products with the shortest shelf life—hello, ‘Eat First’ tape—this problem is solved.

‘Eat First’ tape
You can stick the tape on a shelf in the fridge where you place leftovers and packages that need to be used first. You can also use it to label containers and loose packages. The latter is especially useful. And it seems to work. The effect of the ‘Eat First tape’ was studied* by having 140 people use the tape for two weeks and measuring how much food they threw away before and after this period. The result: the ‘tape users’ threw away an average of 28% less food.

Online orders
If you shop online at Jumbo during No Food Waste Week (9 to 15 September), you will receive a roll of ‘Eat First’ tape free of charge. Good idea, but not a Jumbo customer? Then simply buy a roll of masking tape to stick on your Tupperware and add a date. Easy does it!
