New holiday: International Junk Food Day

It will be a little while before this holiday becomes an official day off, but we’re celebrating it anyway: today is International Junk Food Day. Set that calorie table aside, forget about the scales, because you celebrate this holiday by eating every snack you’re craving.

This holiday celebrates fries, pays tribute to the bamibal and puts the kapsalon in the well-deserved spotlight. Why, exactly? Well, snack culture is constantly evolving. Some foodies may think good food only counts when there’s a Michelin star nearby, but of course that’s nonsense: a kipcorn now and then brings people together, and you can even eat a frikandel with your pinky raised.

Mexican fries

In recent years, serious chefs have embraced quick snacks. Just think of Sergio Herman and his Frites Atelier: at the new location in Roosendaal, more than eighty people can enjoy Sergio’s Mexican fries, with cheese, jalapeño peppers and pulled pork. The culinary master also recently revealed the secret behind his favorite snack, the shrimp croquette. Even Jonnie and Thérèse are entering the wonderful world of snack bars.

Kapsalon around the world

The quintessentially Dutch kapsalon is also conquering the world and making waves internationally, particularly in Germany and… Nepal. The frikandel? It’s developing in surprising ways, for example into a Frikandellington or a frikandel Hawaii. And people, spare a thought for the Kroepia too!

Deep-fry at 180 degrees

Still not quite sure how you want to celebrate International Junk Food Day? Get ideas from Snackspert, who knows everything about kaassoufflé, frietpatat (his term, so no one feels offended) and other delicacies fried at 180 degrees. Another idea: make a fry table, the ultimate way to celebrate Junk Food Day. Enjoy!
