Once and for all: Cola Light and Cola Zero are NOT the same

When you order a Cola Zero on a terrace, they bring you a Cola Light. Annoying! Because although neither contains sugar or calories, they taste completely different. What’s the difference?

Cola Light came onto the market in the eighties. The sugar in Cola was replaced with aspartame and voilà, your favorite soft drink suddenly resembled – in terms of calories, at least – an ultra-healthy mineral water. And the taste? Drink it as cold as possible, was the advice, so you wouldn’t taste the sweeteners quite so much. The cola flavor in this new Coca-Cola was lighter, slightly more acidic, genuinely different from classic Cola.

Professor

In 2006, Coca-Cola Zero suddenly appeared in supermarkets. With sweeteners instead of sugar, no calories, so good for your six-pack—that sounds familiar. But when you taste them, you notice immediately: they both taste completely different. Because with this variant, the cola professors in their laboratory tried to imitate the taste of ‘real’ cola as closely as possible.

Send it back

Okay, so you’re not being fussy if you send the Light back when you ordered Zero: they really do taste different. That has now been officially established.
