Making nachos yourself is actually not that difficult. Of course, you wouldn’t go to the trouble if you were eating savoury tortilla chips—you simply buy them by the sackful at the supermarket, easy enough. But sweet chips? The people at Doritos haven’t thought of that yet (we’re keeping an eye on this, Doritos headquarters). So you have to make them yourself.

Luckily, that’s super simple. And once you’ve made those sweet nachos, you obviously don’t dip them in cheese sauce or guacamole. No, you make a deliciously gooey caramel sauce to go with them. Light some candles, start a film and enjoy dipping and munching—happiness can be this easy.

How to make sweet tortilla chips

  • Melt the butter in the microwave.
  • Preheat the oven to 170 degrees.
  • Brush the tortillas with the melted butter. Mix the sugar and cinnamon together. Sprinkle the cinnamon sugar over the tortillas. Turn the wraps over and repeat on the other side.
  • Cut them into small triangles, place them on a baking tray lined with baking paper and bake for 5 to 7 minutes until golden brown and crisp.

Make the caramel sauce while the chips are in the oven. Everyone has their favourite recipe for it, but this recipe for South African caramel sauce has never let me down. It’s also delicious over ice cream, over the whipped cream on apple pie or straight into your mouth by the large spoonful.
