SAY WHAT? Jumbo is now selling pancake custard and I put it to the test
Pancake custard?! Yes, I too had to think about this one twice. Because is this a tasty combination or not? There’s only one way to find out: into the shopping cart it goes, and taste it! I went ahead and tried it for you.
If something falls into the deliciously-disgusting category — alongside pickles rolled in cheese, custard cakes and Babybel cheeses — it’s this pancake custard from Jumbo. But adventurous as I am, I’m never reluctant to try something like this. During my trip to the supermarket, I tossed a carton into my basket. Waiting until after dinner didn’t work, by the way. Curiosity won out over my self-control, and an hour later I brought the first spoonful to my mouth.
No soggy, mushy pieces of pancake
In my opinion, custard and pancakes don’t sound like such a strange match. Although I prefer spreading syrup on my pancakes rather than custard, I can still understand quite well why these two things would be combined in a carton. At the words ‘with pieces of pancake’, I immediately pictured wet, mushy pieces of pancake, by the way. But fortunately, that turned out not to be the case.
Tasty?
The pancake custard special basically just tastes like vanilla custard with teeny-tiny pieces of pancake in it. They’re so small that if you didn’t know they were in there, I don’t think you’d taste them either. But that doesn’t make it any less delicious, because they do give the custard just a little extra flavour — is that why it’s called ‘special’? Not the flavour of freshly baked pancakes, incidentally, but rather the typical taste of the ready-made, heat-up variety (which are secretly pretty tasty too, right?!).
As happy as a child
So I’d happily have a bowl of pancake custard after dinner. Especially with a few fresh strawberries or blueberries mixed in.
