Seriously: this is how often you should wash your tea towels

The yellow cloth is the grossest thing in the kitchen we know. In second place is the tea towel. Because you should also replace that one much more often than you might think.

Keeping your kitchen spick and span is a challenge. Because cleaning that slippery deep fryer or dust-covered ventilation grilles are the kind of chores you would rather put off thirty times before getting started. A few handy cleaning tips therefore come in useful.

Ultimate breeding ground for bacteria

Take the tea towel. Because even though you may neatly hang it back on its hook after use, we often forget to put it in the laundry basket. The fact that the tea towel has air-dried does not mean it is still clean. In fact, a damp tea towel, just like the yellow cloth, is the ultimate place for bacteria to grow.

Back on the hook

But how often should you wash your tea towel? That of course depends on how often and what you use it for. If you only occasionally dry glasses and your hands, twice a week is probably enough. Do you also use the tea towel for other things, such as wiping splashes off the floor, drying the stove or wooden cutting boards, or do you simply use it for your daily dishes? Then it is wise to hang up a new one every other day.

Musty

In any case, the rule is that as soon as your freshly washed hands smell musty after drying them on the tea towel, you should put the tea towel straight into the laundry basket. This smell is a sign that bacteria and fungi are already doing their work. By the way, it is best to wash it at 60 degrees!
