Snackspert: we need to talk about that hot bastard

Eke Bosman, better known as Instagram phenomenon @snackspert, ate his first frikandel as a baby, hates vlammetjes, has devoured at least 1,000 burgers in his life, suspects there is more mayonnaise in his body than blood, and shares his best and worst snack reviews on FavorFlav every other week. This week was all about deep-fried snacks and a new sauce with the best of both worlds.

Snacks from Cafeteria de Rademaker, Soesterberg

It’s a shame Princess Beatrix doesn’t live in Soestdijk Palace, because otherwise she could hop in the car and drive to nearby Soesterberg to visit Cafeteria de Rademaker. What a buzzing snack bar that is. And no, the order you see above isn’t all for me, because otherwise I’d still be hooked up to a feeding tube. But I went for the freshly cut fries with just mayo, the coarse frikandel, a spicy souflesse… and that bent dick on the right is the Hete Donder. The fries are good, really nothing to complain about, the spicy souflesse is a delicious hot cheese soufflé, the coarse frikandel is a disappointment because it’s far too gritty and bitter, but in this review I especially want to talk about that hot bastard. What an absolute banger of a snack. It’s a kind of spicy, slightly thicker (and therefore crooked) frikandel where every bite feels like a visit to Anja the hairdresser because it’s definitely spicy. Much better than a pikanto, much better than a meat stick. So now I want to make a call to all cafeterias in the Netherlands: get a Hete Donder in stock. We’re going to make it a success.

Crispy frikandel from Lidl

Let’s talk about a seriously underrated snack, even less popular than the excellent mexicano, I dare say: the viandel. Or as they call it at Lidl: the crispy frikandel. Because that’s basically what it is, right? A crispy frikandel. So tasty! Look, compared with other viandels I’ve eaten in my life (and there haven’t been many), it’s simply good, but I have to admit that I still haven’t come across the perfect viandel. Maybe make the crispy coating a little more heavily seasoned, add a bit more salt—that would improve it a lot. But this one from Lidl is a fine specimen. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Mayochup from Lidl

Lidl’s mayochup has already secured a spot in the “nobody buys me, so I might as well be super cheap” corner. And that’s a shame, because compared with Zaanse’s mayonnaise-ketchup sauce, this one is much better. Much creamier, while the taste of ketchup is still present. It even reminds me a little of the whiskey cocktail sauce I occasionally have with fish, so make the most of that. Yes, guys, I also expected to tear it to shreds, but Lidl has managed to give it an identical flavor. And that deserves applause. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
