Start training: Dutch wine marathon is coming

Grab your sneakers, tie your laces, get your corkscrew and start training, because in autumn 2021 you’ll want to be able to trot through the vineyards like a little deer, from one glass of wine to the next. Next October, the first Dutch wine marathon will be held in the vineyards of Limburg.

Up hills and down hills
This Dutch marathon has a challenging course, so a personal best may not be on the cards: Limburg is considerably hillier than the average running track. The runners will start at the Wittemer Wijngaard in Wahlwiller, and from there run 42 kilometres up and down the hills between the vines. Along the way, they will be offered not only water and sports drinks, but also glasses of Limburg wine and matching snacks. That way, you’ll speed to the finish, where you’ll be welcomed with music and even more wine.
23 wine stops
The Limburg wine marathon is reminiscent of the annual wine marathon in Bordeaux, where you can make 23 wine stops along the way, or the Valtellina winetrail in Italy. In America, a marathon is also organised for people who love running and eating: the Krispy Kreme Challenge, with a deliciously greasy doughnut (or twelve) along the way. Thinking: that marathon is a bit much for me? Then you can also go for a half marathon or try ten kilometres. But that does mean less wine along the way, because, well, otherwise it wouldn’t be fair.
