Strange foods we used to love en masse

The weird things I used to eat because I thought they were delicious… No, I’m glad I’ve developed a little more taste (literally and figuratively) by now. Not to be confused with products or combinations that are disgustingly delicious, by the way, because I still enjoy those just fine.

But the things below that people ate when they were young… No, I’ll pass on those. Except number three, because that genuinely sounds delicious to me!

Strange eating habits from the past

1. Speculaas sandwich
With butter, obviously. When I was in a really crazy mood, I’d sometimes put it in the microwave. But honestly: I can’t imagine eating a slice of bread with a huge lump of butter and a speculaas cookie on it now. So sweet! And the same goes for Schuddebuikjes on bread, because that’s really much of a muchness.

2. Bread with mayonnaise
Eww, gross! Mayo on bread without an egg? Still, some people swore by it — more than that: it’s still their guilty pleasure snack. Hmm.

3. Savoury French toast
This genuinely sounds delicious; instead of cinnamon, add chopped garlic, salt and pepper to your French toast. Some grated cheese, and doesn’t this sound like a delicious garlic bread? I’m definitely going to try this soon.

4. Pasta with ketchup
For when tomato sauce was a slightly too complex flavour for you… Some people still enjoy this, yes, even as adults. Personally, I consider it an insult to pasta. And apparently I’m not the only one, as shown by the story ‘My Italian father-in-law refuses to eat my pasta.’

5. Coconut bread on bread
Does this even still exist? Those weird dry slices with their strange texture were a real treat for my colleague Sharon (‘especially the pink ones’), but I never understood the appeal.

6. Never wanting the crusts
I genuinely have no idea why we were constantly making such a fuss about it; why did we refuse to eat the crusts?! And then still having to eat them because your parents said that’s where most of the nutrients were… (parents say more strange things to make sure their children finish their plates..).

7. ‘Savoury first, sweet afterwards’
Was that the rule at your house too: first eat your bread with savoury toppings and only then have something sweet? And now that you can decide everything for yourself, do you still stick to that order, just like I do?
